Mathematics Subject Overview

Our vision:

Mathematics is the science of quality, quantity, shapes, patterns and change.

It allows for the formulation and solution of real-world problems as well as the creation of new ideas for our evolving world. We recognise that Mathematics is the means on which technological, industrial, military, economic, and political systems rely.

At William Edwards we aim to provide all students with a rewarding and enjoyable experience of mathematics. We share our enthusiasm and passion for Mathematics, nurturing students to enjoy and respect mathematical approach and enquiry. We provide opportunities so they understand the rules and fundamental theories through a knowledge based curriculum.

We believe our approach builds confidence, resilience and the ability to think logically to solve problems.

Numeracy is delivered through a number of platforms, including one to one support, the maths classroom and regularly through tutor groups. Students with the greatest need are given additional support through an increase in curriculum hours. Students also have the possibility to take part in the annual UKMT (UK National Maths Challenge) throughout their time at William Edwards School.

High achieving students in Year 11 are provided with the opportunity to extend their mathematical knowledge through the Free Standing Maths Qualification (FSMQ).

Students are set in mathematical ability groups. These groups are fluid throughout the course of their five years.

Students in years 7, 8 and 9 follow the Mathematics Mastery approach, which has been inspired by internationally recognised practice, particularly drawing on evidence from Singapore and Shanghai. It is a limitless curriculum, which allows students to investigate the different strands of Mathematics, and through problem solving and rich tasks, deepens their understanding of the subject.

Students in Year 10 and 11 follow the Edexcel New GCSE Maths Specification Course.

Our half-termly formative assessments are designed to support students in achieving fluency in mathematics.

Maths Homework is set weekly using the Sparx Maths platform. Sparx personalises each child’s homework; creating a weekly set of questions tailored to their level of understanding and learning pace. The questions are designed to be achievable, whilst offering the stretch that learners need to make progress. Each week, topics are set in line with the SOW and will make up the majority of the homework questions. Questions from previous topics will also be included in the homework so that students can keep practising the skills they have learned.

Golden Threads

There are ‘Golden Threads’ in Maths that run through our curriculum in Maths:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Ratio & Proportion
  • Probability & Statistics

It is important to note that this approach to our golden threads has flexibility and is led by pupil abilities and needs as well as our expectations of pupils. Teachers are required to use adaptive learning methods to ensure the appropriate level of support and challenge for pupils. Pupils will study the same curriculum at each ability level, but it is the responsibility of the class teacher to ensure appropriate adaptive learning to ensure accessibility and progress for all our pupils.

5 Year Curriculum

Both our KS3 and KS4 curriculum have been created specifically with our students in mind. Schemes of Work (SOW) have been developed by various members of the department; drawing on the experience and expertise of those staff members. These continue to be developed and improved upon, year on year, so that students receive the best Mathematical education possible. The 5-year curriculum is sequenced in a specific order, to enable students to build on their prior knowledge as they progress through Year 7 – 11.

Number is the foundation of Maths, hence we begin with this Golden Thread for Years 7-10. This is a deliberate decision, as without a strong grasp and understanding of this key area, students will encounter difficulties and struggle to progress. We have structured the Golden Threads so as to ensure that students have a strong breadth and depth of knowledge of our curriculum. This is indicated on the enclosed Teaching Overview and Learning Journeys.
