Unlocking Potential Through Literacy: Understanding Its Importance
A lack of fundamental literacy skills creates obstacles throughout life. In childhood, it limits academic achievement; as a young adult, it restricts job prospects; and as a parent, it impairs the ability to support a child’s education. For many, this generational cycle hinders social mobility and life chances.
As artificial intelligence advances and digital misinformation grows, it is now more crucial for students to develop critical and precise reading skills to accurately distinguish between fact and fiction.
For individuals struggling with low literacy, life becomes filled with limitations: difficulty reading books, understanding road signs, interpreting price tags, following transportation schedules, filling out forms, understanding medical instructions, or engaging in the digital world.
Our Objectives:
- Promoting Literacy: We are dedicated to embedding literacy into every aspect of our curriculums. Our staff receive extensive training in advanced literacy methods and tools to foster a well-rounded approach. We frequently research and adopt new and innovative approaches to Literacy from a range of sources, including the EEF (Education Endowment Fund)
- Vocabulary Proficiency: We equip students to master increasingly complex vocabulary across subjects by exploring etymology (word roots), morphology (word structures) and contextualisation methods. This empowers them to confidently interpret subtle meanings in language. This is embedded in our Tutor programme and in subject curriculums.
- Improving Oracy skills: We are committed to cultivating oracy skills across all subjects. This ensures students can confidently express thoughtful answers, participate in discussions, engage in debates, and respectfully challenge diverse viewpoints on a wide range of topics
How can you support our mission to encourage a love of reading within every child?
